Memphis BBQ

Since infamous Payne’s BBQ is not open on Sundays, I went with a backup recommendation from Benito (http://wine-by-benito.blogspot.com/) and Brad (@biskuitatl) and stopped by Central BBQ for lunch as I passed through Memphis today.

The staple Pulled Pork sandwich with slaw was tender and moist with great smoked flavor. The sauce and the beans brought a lot of good spice to the mix. A great dish for lunch so hit it up the next time you are in town. Now, back on the road to Little Rock.

Cheers!

Yum. Thanks for the post. Turn on the heated seats and lock the windows and enjoy your funk…Big Stank on the way to Little Rock

I won’t say anything mean since I have respect for Benito and his opinions, but . . . that BBQ sandwich looks too “saucy.” : )

This is why my Dad and I have disagreements about BBQ — he was born and raised in Memphis and says Memphis BBQ is the best, and I say no — the BBQ where I live — Eastern NC — is by far the best!! ; )

Sorry I missed you Ed, but it was nice talking to you on the phone and Central BBQ is a great place run by nice folks. There are people in Arkansas and Texas who will try and sell you something they call “barbecue” but don’t believe them. Beware false prophets!

Heard good things about Central. Call me a tourist, but a slab of Rendezvous ribs is tough to beat when in Memphis. Also partial to Interstate BBQ…

I’ve got nothin’ for you in Little Rock, sadly.

Alrighty, I made through day 1. I am about 150 miles west of Little Rock and, yes, Jason, I was too funky for myself with the outside temp reaching 102F on the road.

Kimberly, I agree the picture makes it look too saucy, but there is ample meat that allowed the slaw juice and BBQ sauce to incorporate in appropriate portions… not bad, but I still enjoy NC ‘cue as well ever since my father-in-law showed me the ways of smoked pork shoulder and spicy vinegar sauce

Benito, no worries… I got in the area a lot earlier than I thought, so I didn’t quite give you enough heads up. The BBQ recommendation worked out perfectly

Thanks, Joe… I ended up at a place called Big Jakes, which was probably the best in town, but still pretty bad… oh well
