Thanks to Rick Bakas, I will be co-hosting the St. Supery tweetup event on October 20th in Atlanta at a satellite location at the AWS Wine Room in Roswell, a northern suburb. Rick is the emcee of the show presenting live from Murphy’s in the Virginia/Highlands area of town. Our desire is to give more folks in the metro Atlanta area an opportunity to participate in this cool, new, online wine-tasting phenomenon that has recently taken Twitter by storm and to further display its opportunities and interactivity by having multiple locations.
What’s a “tweetup” you ask? A tweetup is an event that can be entirely remote and online or a mesh of live, in-person activity shared with others participating on the interwebs. To follow along, you only need to know the #hashtag being used for the event such as #stsupery, which will be used for this online wine-tasting. Don’t forget to pick up your wine or order the St. Supery tasting pack so you’re ready to follow along. For more information and details see the invites hyperlinked to the venues noted above and for more on where else Rick and St. Supery will be on their East Coast tweetup tour, check out the schedule here.
To further understand this phenomenon, you must go to the source, Taste Live! which has been hosting online wine tastings on Twitter for well over a year now. The main page on their website acts as the branded interface that tracks the presenters notes as well as the Twitter stream of all comments containing the #TTL hashtag. It’s really quite ingenious except when the Twitter API or Twitter itself has problems. I remember when we tried to start a TTL the same night Michael Jackson died. The MJ topic trend brought Twitter to its knees and we ended up having to postpone. Needless to say, many of us who have followed along with TTL have had our share of Fail Whales!! But, alas, do not be discouraged by such growing pains… I hear some enhancements are in the works to mitigate such interruptions from happening in the future. Where else can you enjoy a wine-tasting from the comfort of your own home and “chat” with the winemaker elsewhere in the country or even the globe? For an example of a recent event, here’s a really good and detailed recap from Joe Roberts of 1WineDude.com: http://www.1winedude.com/index.php/2009/09/16/twitter-taste-live-tackles-mendoza-and-sees-its-best-wine-yet/
