Aww yeah… week #3 of College Football is in the books (Go Gators!), week #2 of NFL (Go Falcons!) is wrapping up tonight and tomorrow is the Autumnal Equinox marking the first day of Fall 2009. Coming forth is the cooler weather, the turning of the leaves, and Halloween before heading toward the big holidays at the end of the year. <sigh>To celebrate, I am wrapping up the last day of summer with a refreshing 2004 Domaine des Baumard Savennieres brought over by @jwsobeck this weekend. This generally marks the last of the “summer whites” for me as I tend to hit more of the bigger reds including Ports and Sherries as we head toward the colder months and the holidays.
Savennieres is made up of 100% Chenin Blanc from the Savennieres appellation within Anjou-Saumur region of the Loire Valley in France. It will generally have a creme fraiche, buttermilk and hazelnut type of aromas along with some tart citrusy notes as well.
But, just because summer is over doesn’t mean you can’t continue to enjoy a nice white or rose if that’s what you’re into. There are also quite a few white dessert wines out there (Sauternes comes to mind) you can enjoy during the colder holidays. And let’s not forget the celebratory sparkler — I’ve become partial to the Iron Horse Blanc de Blancsor Brut Rose or Rustico … and I’ve yet to try the Cava I just received as a gift as well. Whatever floats your boat… no pun intended after the week long rains and flooding that has plagued Atlanta.
What does the end of Summer mean to you and how does it affect your wine decisions? I know for you ladies out there the wardrobe changes after Labor Day, so send us your stories.
Cheers!

I love spring. I love summer. Fall is okay. Winter sucks. So the fall equinox makes me sad.
But the Molley Dooker shiraz/cab/merlot I’m drinking and the first episode for the new fall season of HOUSE that’s on is making the cool weather a little more welcoming.
And, the fact that I’m researching great places to stay in Napa or Sonoma for a trip next March is helping too.
Bottoms up!
Oh! And hearing Ed belly laugh downstairs is helping too.
Sweetie… you’re funny… yes, House was good and the wine, not as much as I didn’t really like the Molly Dooker that much tonite… but, it helps ; )
Ed-
Glad to see that ol’ @eatitatlanta decided to bring over some Savennieres! You never know with that guy ; ) (Just kidding Jimmy!)
Nice! Yeah, that was very nice of Jimmy to bring that over… it was very good. We missed your craziness Hardy… thanks again for sharing the case with us.
