I know, this is a wine blog, but to satisfy the technology geek in me, I wanted to comment on a new tool I recently added to my site: Lijit as a recommendation from Andrea of Andy’s Goode Life. I promise, I’ll get back to wine next time.
Lijit is basically a search tool that allows your readers to search for and access content on your site and the sites of everyone in your social network (via blogroll) from one place. It’s only been on my site for one week and I have not performed a super-detailed or formal analysis, I’ll leave that up to the gentlemen at VinTank. These are just some thoughts I jotted down when playing around with the tool. I would love to hear some other opinions. By the way, you can access it from the sidebar to the right under the Links directory.
Pros:
1. Setup was pretty easy and they have a fairly extensive list of social networking sites they are able to integrate with. Additionally, it automatically uses your blogroll to begin building your network the engine uses. This is configurable via your user page on the Lijit site.
2. The biggest value I see is the ability to access other sites from one place, rather than having to visit each site and performing a search on each one.
3. It uses the Google Search engine (pro/con?) which also allows Google ads (pro/con?) on the search results page to be more targeted and reducing search “noise”.
4. The “Explore” feature is pretty cool, though, is a little disappointing graphically. With all of the technology that is available (i.e. Silverlight) today, I expected more. It displays your network in bubbles and you can click through your network and access sites that way. This is a feature that could benefit from some additional features to create more value, like some integration with other blog tools or the display of additional information about those sites.
Cons:
1. It doesn’t seem to discriminate between the content of posts and text elsewhere on the site, like the sidebars. So, for example, when I entered “Murphy Goode”, the results page showed all my posts, even though most weren’t about MG, because I referenced Murphy Goode on a link in my sidebar… not sure technically if there is an easy way to “fine tune” this?
2. You are required to select a tab on the results page for the views you want: Blog, Network, etc. However, the default tab is configurable, so that might reduce the con-ness of this feature in my mind.
3. It was not easy to find the “Close” button for the Explore bubble graphic to get me back to my blog page. I eventually found it way in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. Also, see disappointment in graphical capabilities above.
4. In the Explore feature I could not find a way to get back to “home”, or my site after drilling-down several layers through the network, without drilling back up, which will be harder to do as your network grows. Granted, I never read user manuals so maybe there is a way to do this, but I am pretty good with figuring technology out and this should be intuitive.
In conclusion, as I said before, I think the value here is really the capability of searching a network of sites from one place, which makes it very convenient for the reader. Of course, the level of value will be dependent upon how deep a particular site’s network is as well. Other than that, I think it has some room for improvement in the area of ease of use and GUI (see Explore).

Bravo!
I see one HUGE plus in the syndication of all those on your blogroll/in your social network.
I cannot believe that you are the first (and only?) one to put up a Lijit search option: Especially the tech guys at VinTank and others who profess a desire to actively be networking… really makes me wonder loads about where this fast paced ride is heading.
So I look forward to more Murphy-Goode Bloggers getting in the loop, because I see this as being one easy yet powerful way to “get in” (to pick up a cool slogan
!)…
Let us make this known!
Ed, thanks for giving Lijit a try and for writing an initial review of our service. I wanted to quickly address a couple of points you mentioned above. While our search was originally built on Google’s Custom Search, we have built our own indexer and crawler. This means that instead of trying to index everything out there, we’re able to index only the things important to you. I spoke with our development team and we’ve switched you over to our internal search engine. You should start seeing more relevant results in about 24-48 hours.
Additionally, you didn’t mention the value of our stats, which is a huge part of how we help blog publishers. Our stats tell you what searches are being done on your blog, where your readers are coming from, and most importantly, what searches they’re doing that return no results. This is valuable information for better understanding and serving your readers.
If you or your readers have any questions, feel free to send them my way. I’m tara [at] lijit [dot] com and I’m happy to help. Thanks again for your support.
Oh, and I’m pretty sure we’ll be focusing more attention on the Explore feature…real soon. Right after we’ve done all those other cool things we want to do.
Great information, Tara. I knew I would miss something in my quick, informal review. Wanted to get something up to generate some conversation before I left town. Statistics are very valuable, so I need to definitely dive into that a bit more, and, of course, if you’d like, I could be a beta site for some of your upcoming changes… let me know. I will certainly add more comments as I dig deeper into your product.
Lijit really is legit. As part of the Boulder tech scene, I’m to be part of the community creating so many useful web 2.0 tools like Lijit. If you like what they’re doing, also check out Intense Debates, Brightkite, contxts or other projects Alex King is part of.
Wow, Ed,
I LOVE this conversation. I have learned loads since starting this journey and these few comments so far are pushing my learning curve…
Tara, we would love to see an app coming through to plug on wp.com blogs, do you know of any techies I could get pumped for such a task?
Rick, do you think we can get more from the Murphy-Goode hopefuls on to this kind of networking? Would be awesome and so helpful for the successful candidate to have a wide support base, especially if we consider how diverse the field is! Thanks for the heads up on Intense Debates and Alex King… off to do some googling
.
@Andy Goodelife If other Murphy-Goode hopefuls are using web 2.0 tools, I’d like to see what they’re using. BTW, Alex King also provided some of the dev for ShareThis, but not contxts.com, that was Matt Galligan who co-founded SocialThing. Matt and Digg’s lead Architect are working on something these days.
Andy and Rick, thanks for the insights. Rick, I will definitely check out these other tools.. I have also reached out to my Developers networks for more tools and will be happy to share what I find.
Ed, I just wanted to let you know that I made some changes to your account that I hope you’ll like. First of all, I switched you to the internal search engine that we built on Lucene, so results should be more relevant. Also, with this change, you’ll now see a ‘Lijit picks’ tab when you do a search (I also set this as your default tab). The Lijit picks will give you the top 3 search results from your blog, your content, and your network.
Also, I switched thumbnails on for you, meaning that your search results will now display thumbnail images from those you include with your blog posts. I think it looks sharp but would love to hear your thoughts.
And Andy, we hear you on the wordpress.com request and are doing all we can on that front. Currently, Wordpress.com does not allow any third-party javascript widgets but we’re hoping that we can soon change their minds!
Tara, please do not ever leave your job, you are an awesome employee for an awesome company!
Thanks for all the effort and willingness to help the wine bloggers here put some power behind their blogrolls.
Thanks, Tara and Andy… I’ll dive deeper into the functionality when I get back from vacation, but I really appreciate the focus on the capabilities on my site and hope I can add some value by giving good feedback on the results!
