Malbec-kons

I can’t believe we are passed the midway point of March already.  Almost a quarter into the new year and it’s still a little chilly outside here in the ATL.  I am so ready for spring.  And, being almost through March also means our neighborhood is ready for another tasting, this one focused on Malbec.  If you’re like me, you’ve had more misses than hits with this varietal that we mostly see from Argentina, though it’s fun and not very expensive to try anyway.

conquistaThe most recent one we tried came from the recommendation of a friend who travelled all day one Saturday to 25 Publix’ only to obtain 18 bottles of the stuff — he said it was a beautiful day and enjoyed the trip with the top down.  This was the $9 Conquista I Tweeted about (see the side bar at the right for Tweets), though we were able to find 5 bottles at our local Kroger right off the bat.  But, don’t tell our friend, or he’ll buy them out! ;)   It was lighter in color than the usual suspects (we like the Altos Las Hormigas), but the nose was welcoming with definite plum and black berries on the palate with a nice spice finish.  Very even, smooth and good for any weeknite.

Dorothy and John of WSJ notice that there are quite a lot to choose from and hope its popularity doesn’t result in the same fate Merlot suffered, but we’ll see what comes to the table this Friday at our tasting and I’ll report back.
